Sewing Caddies for Special Ladies

First up I'd like to say a huge thank you to all my super duper bidders on my wall hanging auction.  So far it's up to $90 which is amazing!  And the big list isn't even out yet.  There are so many wonderful auctions out there, think birthdays, Christmas.  It's like getting something for nothing really if you were going to donate money anyway, and it's going to a great cause.

This afternoon I got a move on with the sewing caddies for 'New Beginnings.'  Gum Nut Designs are collecting sewing caddies that rest over the arm of a chair to hold all your sewing needs while you are stitching.  I decided to make four of them, as that is how many I could cut out of the fabric I had.  These beautiful fabrics were given to me as a swap gift last year.  The sharing and giving in Blogland continues.  The fabric designs were very appropriate for this type of gift I felt.

Don't you love the stitching lines on the red fabric?  There are sewing needles too if you look hard.  The binding fabric has press studs on it.  I have to say that I've accomplished machine sewing on binding!  Fantastic.  Nothing like four lots of binding in one afternoon to sort out a tricky problem.

No.2 is such a fabulous helper.  She could be an armchair if she gets bored of being a kid.  The front pocket has stitching down the middle of the heart to give two pockets.  I needed to add a heart to this project.  It's what the sewers of Brisbane are going to need.

No.2 was quizzing me about why I was making these.  I said to her, there are people just like me (her Mother) that have lost everything and to be given something special, just for them, is hopefully going to give them some hope and the feeling of love through this disaster.  Imagine being able to focus on something else except water damage for an hour in the evenings.  It's got to help a little surely.  It's the equivalent of giving a small child a toy.

I felt a sense of relief when the last of the binding was completed.  Then I realised I still have to make four pin cushions, four needle cases, four scissor keeps and then I'll need to buy the threads and fabrics.  My goodness, I'm not even half way yet!

But I'm soooo not going to complain.  No way!  Not me.  I'm grateful that I have a sewing machine that's dry, lots of lovely fabrics, time to stitch away, and a safe clean (ish, but not really that clean at all, but don't tell anybody!) home to live in.  I'll happily make these things for four lovely ladies.  Actually if I have a root around I'm sure that I'll be able to find plenty of embroidery threads that I haven't touched yet.  One tick for me!  And if I get really organised I could get the pin cushions ready so I can stuff them in the car tomorrow when we go for a day trip.  Perfect.

Would you like to join me in making one of these sewing kits?  Just click on this button for details.

Now do you want to hear something really funny and kinda embarrassing?  I'm betting that I'm the last to discover this but here goes...  I just found the 'View in Google Reader' button!!  It's amazing!  I can't believe I've been blogging for all this time and didn't even press it.  Honestly, sometimes I'm a worry!

oh Sarah, these are just beautiful. I am making some drawstring bags to donate filled with some of the purchased items as well. Not sure my sewing skills extend to sewing caddy, needlebook and pincushion.
You are going to bring a little love and joy to 4 crafty ladies.

They are georgeous and will lift the spirits of each crafter who gets them...a real gift of hope! I am sending 3 cushions up to my cousin who has been trapped in her house by the river in Rockhampton with a tiny baby born in December. I have to finish them tomorrow as my husband has a work appointment up there next week and can take them. If we each do a little bit...eh? I would love to make a few extras for other families too in the next few weeks and months so people resettling in their houses can have something handmade. I'm not quite sure at this time how to get them to these people...I'll work on that!!

I have problems with your blog its very slow to move down the page for some reason every time i try to access it, which is such a shame, as i love it. Have a great weekend, good luck with all your sewing projects. Dee x

Sarah, Thanks for visiting my blog! The fabric weaving is so much fun and so simple- I love the effect. To really see it well done check out spiritcloth.typepad.com.I am taking some of her online classes; so worth it.

Fantastic idea Sarah. Can imagine how much that would mean to someone in that situation. Will have a go at doing one in that time frame.
